PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

Greetings for the Fall. I hope you all had an enjoyable, but not too wet or hot, summ= er. Although summer is our quiet time of year, we still had a nice turn out on a hot day in July for the annual picnic, a very successful benefit golf tournament and another fun golf league. Thank you especially to Solvay Bake= ry for the donation of all the rolls for the picnic. The Fall begins our busy time, and I truly hope you will try to attend as many functions as possible= .

Probably the biggest item to report is that the Solvay Tyrol Club was approved at the recent ITTONA convention in Ne= w York City to host the 2008 ITTONA convention. It will b= e a real challenge to continue the ITTONA tradition of gathering Trentini-Tirol= ese from all over North America and Trentino= , and to continue to develop relationships with Trentini nel Mondo. We at Solvay = are very fortunate to have a large, dedicated membership and our own facilities, and the convention will provide a real opportunity for the convention to ta= ke place where there are many Trentini and allow for a focus on our heritage a= nd tradition. The dates have tentatively been set for July, 2008. Pete Albrigo= has volunteered to chair the convention committee and we look forward to participation from many, many of our members. We are hopeful that representatives from ITTONA will be with us at our opening polenta dinner on September 24th. We plan to hold an informational/kick-off meetin= g on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 at 7:00 pm at the Club. Please come R= 11; all are welcome.

If you’ve been to the Club lately, you will notice a nice improvement in= its appearance. Thanks to Nini (Salvagno) Pikarsky and Louie Nicolini, flower b= oxes have been installed on the front of the building. The red and white flowers give a more Trentino-Tirolese feel and are a nice enhancement.

Thank you also to Paul Milesi, son of Leo Milesi, for tuning and repairing our pi= ano. Paul lives and works in the Wa= shington, D.C. area and, while here o= n a visit, stopped in to donate his time and talent. It is very much appreciate= d, especially to Jerry Capella, who has been known play a tune or two.

As we start a new season of polenta dinners and other events, we again are ope= n to anyone who would like to volunteer their time. Particularly if you would li= ke to make polenta or in general work any dinners, please contact John Maestri= at the Club. The new polenta cookers are  in, in large part thanks to Marty Pikarsky for bricking and John Cre= gg and Al Frizzi for running the gas line.

Finally, I encourage everyone to take time to reflect on our heritage and traditions= . We truly have something unique in Solvay, and sometimes we don’t take the time to appreciate it. In fact, the Post Standard will be publishing an art= icle this Fall on Solvay, and the Tyrol Club will be part of the story.

ITTONA News

2006 Convention - The ITTONA convention took place July 3-5 in New York City. It was very well run and= about a dozen of us from Solvay attended. It had a lot to offer in terms of histo= ry and tradition and was culminated by a beautiful mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral that was said by the Archbishop of Trento.

2008 Convention – We are privileged at Solvay to have been selected to host the 2008 ITTONA convention. We look forward to the challenge and hosting Trentini/Tirolesi, as our focus will be on tradition, culture and heritage. More to come.

Italian Language Stud= ies - If anyone is inter= ested in entering competition to participate in a beginner level Italian language course, please refer to the following website: htt= p://www.mondotrentino.net/ufficio/bando%205_6/bando5ING.htm . It is a 1-year commitment that involves on-line audio and visu= al learning with access to an on-line tutor. You must be 15 years old to apply. The deadline for application is October 3, 2006.

New President<= /u> – We have a new ITTONA president. Ben Maganzini of the New England club takes the place of long-standing Gene Pellegrini of Chicago. Thank you to Gene for many years of service.

Here is a note from Ben: “My parents came to America in 1946 with 1 son an= d 3 daughters, in 1946 they had another boy and in 1951 I was born (the be= st thing that ever happened to them). My mom and dad were kind of old when they had me so when they would return to Italy it was always with me a= nd I was lucky for that. I got married in 1977 to Gayle who was half Italian (Ave= llino) and the other half Irish. We went to Italy on our honeymoon and th= at was it, we both fell in love with all of = Trentino. That was the beginning of vacationing th= ere every year and sometimes twice a year thereafter. We had our first child Crystal in 1981 and three boys after that in 1983, 85, 89 there names being Brett, Kyle, and Craig. We've visited Italy with them and they have all taken to be in love with Trento as we had and they vi= sit there even with out us tagging alon= g. We have since ended up with the family home in Guistino (Pinzolo) and have a lot of great f= riends as well as all the relatives that are in <= st1:PlaceName w:st=3D"on">Trento= Province. Our children particularly Crysta= l has been very active in Trento spending time schooling (master’s degree) and working there as well. I have seen first hand how Trentini nel Mond= o can help. My life in U.S.A. has been in the knife sharpening industry (Moleta), first in the family business in Boston, MA and now in the Connecticut area.  I became interested in the New England Club in 1992 and be= came president in 2002.  I've been = very happy on carrying on that job and it's been nothing but a good time.  I wish that I could pass on to all= descendents what a great culture and heri= tage Trentino is to learn about. I hope I gave you enough history of myself= and look forward to having a lot of fun in this job as well”.

From Luciana Svaldi, Vice President, ITTONA regarding= F. Efrem Trettel

I recently spoke with= Fr. Efrem.  He enjoyed being able = to attend the NY ITTONA Convention and hopes he is well enough to join us in 2= 008 in Solvay for our next ITTONA Convention. In my conversation with him, he mentioned how much he enjoys keeping in touch with the Trentini and was a little sad that those who might like to keep in touch won't know where to w= rite to him since he has now changed his residence and he no longer has an email address. Please let your membership know either through your newsletter and= /at your meetings- for those who might want to drop Father Efrem a line.  I know he would enjoy getting a no= te now and again. And for those who are familiar with the material he has authored, you can continue to send him requests.&nbs= p; He is one of our jewels and has given us many happy moments with his stories, his humor, his musical talents and the love of his faith.  Let us disprove the theory of &quo= t;out of sight . . out of mind'. -  = just don't think it . . . drop him a line now and again he will delight in heari= ng from you and from others who remember him and who may also remember his deceased brother who also was a delight and brought laughter and fun at our past convention gatherings with their Trentino hearts.

Here is his new addre= ss:

Annual Tyrol= Club Benefit Golf Tournament – July 8th

The annual benefit go= lf tournament was a great success – beautiful weather, good golf and gre= at food. This year’s event was won by the team captained by Biagio Vavala (we’re still not sure how that happened). We are happy to announce th= at over $600 was raised for "Exceptional Family Resources". Thank yo= u to all who attended and to John Cregg, Fred Scaia and Kevin Bryans for organiz= ing the event.  =

Annual Tyrol= Club vs. Adelphi Club Golf Tournament

The 3rd an= nual golf match between our clubs took place on August 13th. Unfortunately, Adelphi won again, but we represented ourselves very well, thanks to the 20 or so Tyrol golfers who participated. Maybe next year – hope springs eternal!

 = ;

Golf League

This year’s golf league was a nice success. The league was won by Mark and Joe Cazzolli R= 11; good combination of age and good golf – with a final banquet at the C= lub. There was plenty of good food, good times, and occasionally good golf. Than= ks to all who participated, cooked and helped out.

AUXILIARY PRESIDENT MESSAGE

Dear Auxiliary Member= s,

It is so good to be g= etting back into the swing of things with a new year! Our July picnic was a lot of= fun - thank you to Nicki Albrigo, Michela Kaminski, and Lindsay Marascalchi for helping with the children’s games this year. The children all had fun (even with the brief rain shower) with sack races, egg toss, and water ball= oon toss and everyone was able to win prizes! The face and arm paintings showed= us again what talent the kids have! We had a great turnout for our first dinner meeting with 84 ladies to enjoy a delightful polenta and chicken dinner, cooked, of course, by our master polenta cookers…and how about those gravy men out on the floor – they did a great job! The cooking sessio= ns at the Club will resume in October with Nancy Bellefeuille and Mary Nicolini making frittata and in November, Janice Todeschini will be showing us how s= he makes almond paste cookies – call Lisa Campagna at 488-5314 to get on= the list to participate. Special recognition goes out to Mary Martinelli Taroll= i, who will be 100 years young in November.&n= bsp; Mary is the wife of the late Primo Tarolli, one of our Club’s founders.  She certainly has h= ad a long presence at the Club and our congratulations goes out to her as does o= ur thanks for all of her efforts put into the Club for so many years! We are making an effort to update our member list, so call me if you know anyone w= ho is approaching 80 years of age so our remembrance chairperson, Irene Bertol= ini, can send a card, or 90 years of age so Marguerite won’t be looking for dues, or anyone who is not feeling well or having surgery, so our sunshine chairperson, Dora Capella, can send a card. If anyone is interested in addi= ng a loved one’s name to our Ladies Auxiliary Memorial Plaque, please cont= act me at 468-0459, and please, do not hesitate to contact me with any suggesti= ons, questions, or concerns you may have regarding the Auxiliary and events.  See you at the Club!!
